Robbie Williams has played a brief pre-race show in Flemington’s Mounting Yard ahead of the 2026 Melbourne Cup, apparently after snatching roughly 20 minutes’ sleep during a 30-hour journey from his home in Los Angeles. The portable stage and catwalk took about 15 minutes to assemble, and the set itself lasted about as long.

Writing from high in the Members Stand, The Age's senior culture writer Karl Quinn described Williams entering the yard in a dark blue suit, chin up and chest out, lapping up the attention of the crowd. He was still away to the northern end of the yard when he began singing Feel.

By the time he reached the stage, moving through a line of white-clad dancers carrying yellow parasols, his 10-strong band had segued into Rock DJ. Williams gave a more or less full-length rendition of the track, then went back out into the crowd to lead a mass singalong to the ballad Angel, again delivered close to complete. He finished with Let Me Entertain You. A burst of pink smoke marked the end of the show; with dancers waving gold flags and covering most of the Mounting Yard, he headed through the roses towards the rails.

Melbourne loves Williams, who filmed Better Man, the story of his life, in the city and has been given the keys to it. He will play a full concert at Marvel next week, and would be back for a full set about three hours after the pre-race show. The Victoria Racing Club’s chief executive, Kylie Rogers, was instrumental in landing him for the AFL grand final at the MCG four years ago, a performance Quinn wrote had set the bar for grand final entertainment.

Quinn could not see where Williams ended up from his vantage point, but said those around him insisted the singer was at the finishing post.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The Melbourne Cup draws a large national and international audience, and its pre-race entertainment is part of the broadcast product the Victoria Racing Club sells.
  • Williams is a familiar figure in Melbourne, which makes his appearance a local story as much as a racing one.
  • For readers, the practical follow-up is his full concert at Marvel next week.

Background

Robbie Williams is a British pop singer whose career spans several decades of hit singles, and he has a long association with large Australian sporting events. The Melbourne Cup is Australia's best-known horse race and is run at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne. In recent years the Victoria Racing Club has booked major international performers for pre-race shows, and Williams' appearance continues that pattern.

What to Watch

  • Williams' full concert at Marvel next week, his second Melbourne performance in the space of days.
  • Whether the short pre-race format, built around a portable stage and catwalk in the Mounting Yard, is repeated at future Cups.
  • The finishing order of the 2026 Melbourne Cup, which the pre-race show preceded.
