Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the attack shattered windows in an intensive care unit at one medical facility and in two wards at another in the same district, though no patients or medical staff were wounded. A blast wave also damaged a university dormitory, wounding a 20-year-old woman. A fatality occurred near a supermarket in a non-residential area, Mr Klitschko said on social media.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian ballistic missiles struck the grounds of a university and surrounding areas, including a metro station and residential buildings. "The missiles hit very crowded areas, and there is not a single military facility nearby. This was a strike directly on the city, on its infrastructure," he said.
The intensification of drone and missile attacks has put Kyiv, a city of around three million people, on a near-constant state of alert in recent weeks.
The latest barrage falls just hours before a truce was expected to take effect in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, where residents have faced severe shortages of food, water and medicine. Russia announced yesterday that it would consider more local truces for humanitarian purposes but insisted it would not slow the overall pace of the war. The sides are preparing to resume stalled talks under US mediation next month.
