In a study released this week, researchers evaluated the state of the global network of seed banks — often called 'doomsday vaults' — that store seeds from thousands of crop varieties. The findings, published in a leading scientific journal, paint a sobering picture of underfunding, incomplete collections, and vulnerabilities to natural and human-made disasters.
While the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, buried deep in permafrost, remains the most famous and arguably the most secure, many smaller regional and national seed banks face significant challenges. The analysis found that nearly a third of the surveyed vaults lack adequate backup storage, and some have suffered from power outages, flooding, or contamination. More critically, the genetic diversity captured in these banks may not be sufficient to cover the traits needed for future crops to adapt to rapidly changing climates.
Dr. Elena Marchetti, a lead author of the study, told reporters that the 'disturbing realization' is that the network is fragmented and uneven. 'We have a false sense of security. The vaults are there, but they are not a silver bullet. Many collections are incomplete, and we are losing traditional varieties faster than we can bank them.'
The study also noted that political instability in some regions threatens the safety of national seed banks. In countries affected by conflict, seed collections have been destroyed or looted, and international efforts to duplicate them in safer locations have been slow.
Advocates for the vault network argue that the system has already proven its value, with the Svalbard vault providing seeds to help restore collections damaged in Syria and elsewhere. They caution that the new study should be seen as a call to action rather than a condemnation.
'We need to invest more, not despair,' said Dr. Jonas Berglund, a seed bank curator in Sweden. 'The study highlights real gaps, but we also have the tools to fix them. The question is political will.'
Climate change poses an additional threat: the permafrost that keeps the Svalbard vault cold is thawing, requiring costly upgrades. The study recommends increased funding, better coordination, and a global effort to identify and bank the most critical crop varieties before they disappear.
