Police in South Auckland have discovered more than 130 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $40 million inside a shipping container, along with two pistols and ammunition.
Staff at a South Auckland business were unpacking the container on Tuesday and called police after finding suspicious-looking bags. Detective Inspector Karen Bright said police found 137 bricks of the Class A drug. The haul also included two Glock pistols and 200 rounds of ammunition.
"We can confirm the cocaine has been seized, and further enquiries are underway into the shipment at present," Bright said. "Police will be liaising with international law enforcement partners, and we acknowledge the assistance of New Zealand Customs with our enquiries so far."
Bright said the shipment arrived from the Netherlands, stopping at Balboa on the way.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- More than 130 kilograms of cocaine, with a street value estimated at $40 million, has been taken out of circulation.
- The shipment's reported route from the Netherlands via Balboa points to an international trafficking network.
- Police are working with international law enforcement partners and New Zealand Customs, so further developments are likely as the enquiry continues.
Background
Cocaine is a Class A drug in New Zealand, and police and Customs cooperate to intercept drugs arriving by sea. Container shipping is a common method for moving large quantities of illicit drugs across borders. Balboa is a Pacific port in Panama, a notable detail in the shipment's reported route, though no further information has been given about the container's ownership or intended destination.
What to Watch
- Whether the enquiry leads to arrests or charges as police trace the shipment.
- Any further seizures or action by international law enforcement partners.
- Whether police release additional details about the container's origin or the business that reported it.
