Generation Lab, a longevity-focused startup, has announced a new rejuvenation treatment called 1-Generation, an injectable combination of two existing drugs. In a marketing pitch to select journalists, CEO Alina Su claimed the treatment "blocks the systemic spread of aging in the bloodstream, reawakens the body's own repair mechanism and restores health and youth to multiple tissues." The company says it is offering access to a "private cohort" of influential individuals, with a long waitlist including celebrities.
The scientific basis for the treatment stems from the work of founder Irina Conboy, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, who has studied parabiosis—the surgical joining of circulatory systems between old and young animals. This procedure has been shown to reverse some signs of aging in older animals, but is not feasible in humans. Conboy says she has identified a drug combination that mimics these effects without blood exchange.
Conboy, Su, and several other insiders have been taking the drugs for two months and report subjective improvements. A spreadsheet shared with MIT Technology Review listed benefits including improved vision, longer exercise sessions, better erections, and increased bowel movements. The company plans to launch a larger study of 100 or more subjects, but participants will be required to pay for enrollment, a practice often criticized as a sales channel rather than rigorous science.
Concerns have been raised about the trial's leadership by Dr. Matt Cook, founder of BioReset Medical clinics, who was previously reported to have recommended COVID-19 treatments labeled as fraudulent by the FDA, including inhaling amniotic fluid. Generation Lab has not disclosed the identities of the two drugs in 1-Generation, making independent verification impossible.
Proponents argue that the approach is grounded in established parabiosis research and could lead to a viable antiaging therapy. Critics counter that without transparency, peer review, or standard clinical trials, the claims are premature and potentially misleading. The longevity field has struggled with unproven treatments and commercialization of hope.
