Researchers analyzing the brains of 125 deceased former NFL players found that 33 (26.4%) showed definitive signs of CTE, according to the study led by Dr. Ann McKee, chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System and director of the Boston University CTE Center. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), examined donated brain tissue from players who died between 2016 and 2021, with an average age at death of 60.
CTE is associated with repeated blows to the head and can cause symptoms including memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, aggression, depression, and progressive dementia. The disease can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem.
The study's authors noted that because the sample comprised primarily brains donated by families concerned about CTE, the 26.4% figure likely over-represents the true prevalence. However, they also emphasized that the rate is alarmingly high compared to the general population, where CTE is rare. In a comparison group of 35 non-NFL athletes and non-athletes, no cases of CTE were found.
The NFL has acknowledged a link between football and CTE and has implemented rule changes to reduce head impacts, including banning certain types of tackles and kickoffs. In 2015, the league settled a class-action lawsuit with retired players for up to $1 billion over concussion-related claims.
Critics argue that despite these changes, the NFL has not done enough to protect players. Dr. McKee stated, 'We need to continue to work to make the game safer for all participants, from youth to professional levels.' She called for further research into biomarkers and living diagnoses for CTE.
The NFL responded with a statement saying, 'We continue to prioritize player health and safety. The league is committed to supporting research to better understand and prevent head injuries in football.'
Families of deceased players have expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for more protective measures and others accepting the risks of the sport. One widow of a former player, who requested anonymity, said, 'He loved the game, but I wonder if it cost him his future.'
The study adds to a growing body of evidence on CTE and professional football, raising ethical questions about the sport's future and the responsibilities of leagues to protect athletes.
