Firmus Technologies has lodged plans for an AI data centre in north-west Tasmania, with a novel cooling strategy that involves trucking in water and harvesting rainwater. The facility, designed to support the growing computational demands of artificial intelligence, would require significant water for cooling high-performance servers. According to the proposal, the company intends to supplement its water supply through rainwater capture and regular deliveries by truck, rather than relying solely on municipal or groundwater sources.
The proposal is now open for community submissions, allowing residents and local organisations to voice their support or concerns. The Tasmanian government has not yet issued a statement on the project, but the announcement has already drawn attention from environmental groups and local industry bodies.
AI data centres are notorious for high water and energy consumption. A single large facility can use millions of litres of water per day for cooling, depending on the climate and technology. Firmus’s choice to truck in water suggests either a lack of reliable local water infrastructure or a strategy to minimise demand on local supplies during dry periods. However, critics argue that transporting water by truck carries its own environmental costs, including fuel consumption and road wear.
“The use of trucked water raises questions about the long-term sustainability of the facility,” said Dr. Emily Tran, an environmental engineer at the University of Tasmania. “Rainwater harvesting is a positive step, but it may not be sufficient during drought years. The community will want to understand the total water footprint and whether alternative cooling methods were considered.”
Supporters of the project point to the economic benefits of hosting an AI data centre, including job creation during construction and operation, and a potential boost for Tasmania’s technology sector. “Data centres are becoming critical infrastructure for the digital economy, and regional areas like north-west Tasmania can benefit from hosting them,” said Mark Holton, a business development consultant in Launceston.
The proposal is at an early stage, with the submission period now open. The Tasmanian Planning Commission is expected to review the plans alongside community feedback. No timeline has been set for a final decision.
