Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacterium found in warm, brackish water. Symptoms of infection include fever, chills, blistering skin lesions, and rapidly progressing necrotizing fasciitis—a condition that destroys flesh and can lead to sepsis.

The Florida Department of Health advises residents and visitors to avoid swimming with open wounds, to thoroughly cook shellfish, and to seek immediate medical attention if signs of infection appear after exposure to warm coastal waters.
Environmental scientists point to climate change as a contributing factor. Warmer water temperatures, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, have expanded the geographic range and seasonal duration of Vibrio vulnificus. Additionally, hurricanes and coastal flooding can increase human contact with contaminated water. For instance, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in 2022, Florida reported multiple cases and deaths linked to Vibrio infections.
Local authorities are stepping up public awareness campaigns, particularly in coastal communities popular with tourists. Beachgoers are urged to check water quality advisories and avoid entering the water if they have cuts or scrapes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to monitor the situation and has issued guidelines for clinicians to quickly diagnose and treat Vibrio infections with antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgical debridement.
Critics argue that more needs to be done to address the underlying environmental factors, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving coastal water monitoring. Some public health advocates are calling for better data sharing between state and federal agencies to track outbreaks in real time.
