Three people have been charged after a police chase through Brisbane's inner-west suburbs on Friday night, with Polair footage released late on Saturday showing a black SUV driving on the wrong side of the Walter Taylor Bridge and Coonan Street in Indooroopilly. The chase followed an alleged crime spree that included stealing a car, breaking into a home and attempting an armed robbery.
A man and woman allegedly entered a home in Kuraby about 3.15pm on Friday and threatened a woman inside with a knife, attempting to steal a car. The pair are also accused of an earlier attempted armed robbery in Sunnybank Hills and fleeing these incidents in a black SUV allegedly stolen from a car wash on Brisbane Road at Goodna on Wednesday.
Polair began tracking the SUV about 5pm after it was seen in Waterford. The vehicle was allegedly tracked through Forest Lake, Sumner Park, Corinda and Indooroopilly before a tyre deflation device was deployed at Milton about 6.15pm. The SUV stopped on Gailey Road in St Lucia about 6.20pm and three occupants were taken into custody.
A 26-year-old Morningside woman and a 22-year-old Kingston woman have been charged with multiple offences, including two counts each of entering a dwelling with intent, stealing and armed robbery, plus attempted unlawful use of motor vehicles. Both were due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.
A 24-year-old Forest Lake man has been charged with 12 offences including two counts each of entering a dwelling with intent and armed robbery, as well as stealing and attempted unlawful use of motor vehicles. He was also scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incidents or has relevant dashcam or CCTV vision to contact them.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- The chase and alleged crime spree have raised concerns about public safety in Brisbane's inner-west suburbs, with a knife threat and dangerous driving on the wrong side of a bridge.
- The use of Polair and a tyre deflation device highlights police tactics in pursuing fleeing suspects, which may spark debate on pursuit policies.
- The case involves multiple charges across several suburbs, indicating a broader criminal investigation that may yield further details.
Background
Brisbane has seen occasional high-speed police chases involving stolen vehicles, with Polair often used to track suspects from the air. The Walter Taylor Bridge is a major crossing over the Brisbane River connecting Indooroopilly and Chelmer, and driving on the wrong side presents a serious risk to other road users. The alleged crime spree stretched from Kuraby in the south to Indooroopilly in the inner-west.
Key Perspectives
Queensland Police: Alleged the three offenders were involved in a crime spree that included entering a home, threatening a woman with a knife, attempted armed robbery in Sunnybank Hills, and fleeing in a stolen SUV.
