Nepal’s Hydropower Reliance Called Into Question After Deadly Floods
Catastrophic floods that killed more than 1,300 people and destroyed villages along the Nepal-Tibet border have severely damaged 12 hydropower plants in the Trishuli River basin, knocking out more than 10% of Nepal’s total power generation capacity and prompting the state-owned electricity authority to call for a fundamental reassessment of the country’s energy policy. Nepal produces nearly all of its electricity from hydropower and exports around $200m worth annually to India and Bangladesh.
