Bayern Munich rested newly-crowned Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane as they beat second-tier Magdeburg 6-1 in the German Cup second round on Wednesday, while coach Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital after collapsing during a training session last week.
Michael Olise scored twice, either side of Ismael Saibari's goal, and second-half strikes from Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown eased matters further before David Santos Daiber added a sixth in stoppage time.
Kane, who on Monday became the first English player since Michael Owen in 2001 to win football's top individual honour, was given a guard of honour before the match and waved to the home crowd at the Allianz Arena. He is expected to be celebrated again before Saturday's Bundesliga top-of-the-table clash with Borussia Dortmund, with the sides level on points.
Kompany was rushed to hospital on Friday after collapsing during a second-team training session, having been nursing a virus in the days before. Board member for sport Max Eberl said before Wednesday's match: "Given the circumstances, he's doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us." Eberl added: "It's a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 percent."
No date has been set for Kompany's return, and Eberl said the Belgian would resume duties only after receiving medical clearance. Assistant coach Aaron Danks, in charge since the collapse, was on the bench for the match and for Sunday's 3-1 win at Freiburg.
Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga title race, face Dortmund on Saturday before travelling to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League next week.
