Three children have been taken to hospital with minor injuries after a double decker school bus crashed into a railway bridge in Newport on Tuesday morning, ripping off the roof. Gwent Police said the collision happened on Tregare Street at about 07:45 BST. The pupils' injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The bus was travelling to Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, a Welsh-medium secondary school on Duffryn Way in Newport, when it hit a bridge at Maindee West between Newport and Cwmbran, according to Transport for Wales. Emergency services including South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the scene. The road was closed with diversions in place but has since reopened.

Jo Townsend, whose 13-year-old son Gruff was one of the pupils taken to hospital, described the incident. "I was worried, frantic. I went under the tape, I was getting to my son," she said, as reported by BBC Wales. "You send them off to school and you think everything will be ok... you don't expect anything like this to happen."

She said the "whole top of the bus came off" and her son was on the upper deck at the back. "He said it all went dark and then lights were flickering, there was the sounds of screaming and metal scraping metal," she added. Gruff was apparently "hit in the head with a pole" during the crash but was being treated for bumps and scratches.

A nearby nursery, Lullabyz, moved its children elsewhere and allowed paramedics to use its site for treatment. The bus was removed from the scene by midday, with the ripped-off roof recovered first. There was no visible damage to the bridge.

Transport for Wales said rail services faced delays and cancellations between Newport and Hereford for most of Tuesday morning. Newport council said it was working with emergency services and its priority was "ensuring the well-being of those involved in the collision."

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • A crash involving a school bus raises immediate concerns about pupil safety on school transport in the Newport area.
  • The incident caused significant disruption to rail services and local roads during morning rush hour.
  • Authorities and the community will likely review the safety of routes used by double decker buses around low bridges.

Background

The crash occurred on a double decker bus taking pupils to Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, a Welsh-medium secondary school in Newport. The bus hit a railway bridge on Tregare Street in the Maindee West area. Such collisions are not uncommon in the UK, where many older railway bridges have limited height clearance. Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service responded to Tuesday's incident.

Key Perspectives

Parents and affected families: Their immediate concern is the wellbeing of the injured children, with one parent describing the shock and worry of receiving a call from a child involved in a crash. Emergency services and transport authorities: They acted quickly to treat the injured, clear the scene and manage disruption. Transport for Wales reported delays and cancellations on the Newport-Hereford line. Schools and the local council: Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed is directly involved, and Newport council is prioritising the wellbeing of those affected and working with emergency services.

What to Watch

  • Updates on the condition of the three children taken to hospital.
  • Any investigation by Gwent Police or Transport for Wales into the cause of the crash.
  • Potential changes to school bus routes or bridge signage to reduce the risk of similar accidents.
