Counterfactual prompts let beam search self-distill language models at inference
Tan and colleagues translate self-distillation from a training procedure into an inference-time decoding method. Their approach scores candidate answers by how much more likely the frozen model considers them under an excellent-reasoning context than under a poor-reasoning context, then approximates the resulting globally reweighted distribution with beam search.
