The Security Service named the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) and said its primary purpose is to fund academic work that directly improves China's technical espionage capabilities. In an opinion piece published on October 1, former Qantas captain David Evans argues that the locked, bullet-proof cockpit doors introduced after the September 11 attacks may now enable a new form of terror: a hijacker who gains control of the cockpit can lock themselves in, preventing any intervention. The piece, carried by both the Brisbane Times and The Sydney Morning Herald, was cut short in its published form, but the core argument is that a security measure designed to keep attackers out can also keep responders out.
