Velocity scaling improves flow models by correcting sampling time lag
Saied and Fleuret challenge the explanation that mean-squared-error training systematically makes flow-matching velocities too small. Their analysis and ImageNet-256 experiments instead attribute much of velocity scaling’s benefit to population time lag, where sampled states resemble training states from an earlier point in the generation process.
